Remembering Radio Is Kinda Fun
It’s almost as good as a date night.
My wife and I are hanging out in her Mary Kay office on this awesome Friday night. French vanilla coffee is flowin’. She’s workin’ on her latest MK offerings. I’m churnin’ out the words on a couple (probably over-due) articles.
And we are both jammin’ to WCBS, New York’s Greatest Hits.
It’s remindin’ me of all those all-nighters in my high school days with Corpus Christi’s Z-95, KITE 105, and sometimes KOUL Country as the backdrop. Cheryl grew up north of me — in the area we now live — so she’s remembering those Houston legends (that I definitely remember too): 93Q, KRBE, and KILT. (All of those stations are VERY different these days, of course. ) We’ll probably be checking out an old-time country stream later.
Call me silly, but my friends and I used to be VERY excited about getting through on the phone to the DJ’s, yellin’ “Gooooooooo Ray Texans” (or whatever) and hearing it all played back on the air over Duran Duran, Michael Jackson, Thomas Dolby or whoever. We’ve been hearing some people doin’ that same sort of thing tonight up in New York City (and they sound like they may actually be our age!)
Knowing the current state of radio as I do, unfortunately, I can’t be sure tonights bits weren’t recorded weeks ago (and already aired two or three times before), but the memories are still pretty cool.
Anyone else remember good times with their local radio station back in the day?
