God’s Will Isn’t Always What We Think
Corpus Christi’s new Veteran’s Memorial High School is impressive, but a few things bother me about it.
1. The going-out-of-business sign on the old driving range that used to be there wasn’t exactly supportive of the construction that was coming.
2. There sure was a lot of hemming and hawing and other bouts of indecision about what to do with Carroll High even while the new school was going up. My definition of public waste: building new stuff before deciding what to do with the old. Case in point: the courthouse we abandoned in the 1970’s.
3. Fans of the old Memorial Colesium know Corpus Christi’s record with war-related memorial buildings isn’t exactly stellar.
If a church somehow works a deal to rent the auditorium on weekends, I guess I’ll have more confidence that this nice-looking campus really is God’s will. (Not sure many folks realize that, just because something is fancy, expensive and talked of giddily by leaders doesn’t mean its a God thing.)
