Jesus’ Story Is Endlessly Inspirational
Today’s reading: Hebrews 12:1-2
I need to play Othello again. I bought the game on a whim about 4 years ago because I was attracted by the phrase on the box, “Seconds to learn. A lifetime to master.” That’s exactly what I look for in a game.
For a few months, Othello lived up to the promise. I taught the game quickly to dozens of family and friends (of all ages) and we all spent hours playing it. It was, indeed, endlessly entertaining and challenging and proved a great blessing to my life.
But, as I say, that lasted for just a few months. I haven’t played Othello in more than a year. And in two years, I doubt I’ve played more than 4 times.
I see the box every day on my game shelf, right next to my television (which does, of course, get daily use). But, I’m not even sure all the pieces are in the box anymore. I think I’ll see if Dad wants to pull it out and see. If so, it’s about time we had another game or two this afternoon.
All of this comes to mind today because today’s reading makes me realize I sometimes give Jesus the same treatment I’ve given to Othello.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God.”
After reading that, I can’t believe that I sometimes yawn during church!
And just yesterday I had lunch with a dear friend — a man who has worked with me on many church projects — and neither of us mentioned God during the meal.
Geez. What’s wrong with me?
The story of Jesus is endlessly inspirational, and becoming like Jesus is an endlessly thrilling challenge. Thanks be to God for that. May I never forget it.
