God’s Wonder Always Is

Today’s reading: John 1:14-17

For almost 24 hours now, our nation’s attention has been focused on a giant tornado that has killed at least 50 people in Oklahoma. So my following report may seem odd.

But today’s reading is calling me to give that testimony anyway.

God has worked much glory in my life since yesterday. I won’t list the details  here because I’m sure they would be unimpressive for most readers. (One of the miracles involves a few feet of grass that I thought would never turn green again.) But I celebrate them anyway. For me, as for God, wonders are wonders. They always are, and they always are good.

That’s what the word “fullness” is all about in today’s reading.  “From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.” (Verse 16)

I am sometimes criticized for being too optimistic. People say I don’t pay close enough attention to the down side of things. And I realize my boasting of my recent “unimpressive” wonders, in light of the troubling tornado news, is  inviting even more of that.  Many of my friends who will see this on Facebook have spent the last 24 hours posting messages of profound concern for the tornado’s victims, so I can envision their thoughts about this post to include the word “callous.”

To that I’ll say, as I always do,  my “too naive” or “too rosy” outlook comes from God.  It’s part of living fully with Him.

I think I will itemize  another of the wonders I experienced yesterday. It relates to the  tornado after all.

Seeing all of the help that was being offered — and in which I will certainly be participating in the coming days —  has eased my worries about living through another hurricane season along the Texas Gulf Coast. It’s been a blessing to realize that similar assistance will certainly be available to me and my city should we need it.

Thanks be to God for all that is. May I (and we) never cease recognizing and celebrating His wonders.
