Gentleness is God’s Way

Today’s reading: Philippians 4:4-7

Something interesting from my driver’s ed class nearly 30 years ago comes to mind with today’s reading.

“The best drivers inspire no reaction from passengers,” our teacher said one day at the start of class.

In otherwords, he said, the best drivers are not those whose quick thinking help  them avoid collissions. No, the drivers whose habits are worthy of study are those whose smart decisions help them avoid the need for quick thinking all together.

“If your passengers are giving you high-fives after a drive because you made a bunch of exciting moves to stay out of trouble, you have done something wrong,” he said. “You need to pay attention to all the boring drivers in your life. They are the ones who are definitely doing it right.”

Today’s reading reminds me that this same advice applies to more than just driving.

“Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near.” (Verse 5)

It’s amazing how smooth and comfortable my life is when I remain calm and gentle; when I take no chances or do anything outlandish;  when I stay connected to God.

My driver’s ed teacher called this “boring,” but I have a different word — peaceful.

Thanks be to God for being still. May I always remain connected to His small, peaceful voice.

This applies, especially, in “high pressure” situations — tight deadlines, stressful confrontations, and even rush-hour traffic.
