Love Is All That Matters
Today’s reading:Psalm 139:1-10
It’s interesting what a difference love makes.
Taken out of context of the Bible, these line from today’s reading would be terrifying, even sinister:
“You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away. You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, O LORD, you know it completely.”
I am sure I read something similar in 1984 or Brave New World or Fahrenheit 451. In fact, there’s a whole industry of “privacy advocates” devoted to fighting that sort of thing these days. Right?
Frightening. Is God really our Big Brother?
Fortunately, he is not! Not in the sense that George Owell described Big Brother anyway.
The difference between God and any overbearing human leader (or, as is the case with Big Brother any overbearing imaginary leader) is love.
God watches over me, not because He desires to control me or even judge me. He does it simply because He loves me.
I can learn a lot from His example. In fact, all humans who find themselves as leaders would do well to practice this same kind of love. When they do, the world’s privacy advocates can move on to some other great work.
Thanks be to God for the eternal comfort of His love.
